Located in Praça da República, the Church of Misericórdia is a remarkable example of religious architecture from the 16th to the 19th centuries, combining Mannerist, Baroque and Neoclassical elements.
Inside, special highlights include the gilded woodcarved main altar, the royal coat of arms painted above the altar and the decorative stucco paintings with floral motifs.
On the side façade stands the Chapel of Senhor do Calvário, deeply rooted in local tradition, whose panel was restored by the painter Severo Portela in 1980. The imposing portico facing Praça da República is also one of the most striking features of the complex.
