On the access to the settlement of Mesas do Castelinho we find the burial tomb of Monte Branco.
Around 3,000 years old, this historical record goes back to the first millennium before Christ, to the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age.
Look at it and discover its oval shape, with the grave in the centre and other graves around it. Little remains of this necropolis. But some finds stand out, such as the small glass beads of ancient necklaces, left here to bid farewell to the dead.
Now, look around and notice how this burial tomb is located on a higher ground, at the entrance to the Serra do Caldeirão. This was a point of reference but also a point of memory of the ancient populations towards their ancestors.
Go down the dirt track and venture to the discovery of a settlement that was – historically - born after this burial tomb, and that today is called the Archaeological Site of Mesas do Castelinho!
