Now that you have arrived at the settlement of Mesas do Castelinho, we suggest you look at the information panels, locate yourself and follow the directions on the visiting circuit. But first, a brief contextualisation of this place which will allow you a closer look at the remains of this walled settlement:
Founded in the 1st half of the 4th century BC and occupied until the beginning of the 2nd century AD, here lived an Iron Age population which was later joined by conquerors from Rome who boosted the urban growth of this place. Later, between the 9th and 11th centuries AD, a small Islamic fortification, higher up left here the record of the presence of Moorish warriors.
And from a more remote past to a nearer time, a legend! The legend of the Lizard-Man - which we will tell you more about later. Maintained by oral tradition, it associated this settlement with treasures hidden by time. Unfortunately, in 1986, this belief led to the destruction of most of the remains of the Upper Platform and the eastern slope.
Classified as Property of Public Interest, this site has been the target of an archaeological research and local development project since 1989!
